Remembrance Day

We have started our Remembrance Day curriculum in preparation for the Remembrance Day assembly on Friday next week.

I am putting up a few of the videos that the kids watched at school today.  Please take the time to watch the videos and chat with your child about Remembrance Day and what it stands for.  It is tricky for kids this age to truly understanding everything about what Remembrance Day entails.   Some of the kids got tears in their eyes as they watched the videos and I let them know that it is okay for them to feel sad when we talk about Remembrance Day. I myself get tears in my eyes when watching them.

Our discussions about Remembrance Day are focused on celebrating heroes, talking about makes a person a hero,  discussing what is bravery and what peace means to us.  We do a lot of talking about what it means to be Canadian and why we are thankful to those who make sacrifices for us to have freedom.  We also discuss the symbol of the poppy.
Many kids ask questions about terrorism but I keep talks about terrorism out of our Remembrance Day discussions as this is a very difficult concept to discuss at this age group.

Here are the some Remembrance Day videos:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=h3IutxvltBM&feature=related - Highway of Heroes (with the event in Ottawa many kids had questions about what the Highway of Heroes is.  This video helped them see the tribute that takes place to fallen soldiers from Canada).

Here is a picture of the beautiful artwork the students created for Remembrance Day.

Feed the BUG

It is time to FEED THE BUG!

Our school is having a challenge between classrooms to see which class can bring in the most NON-PERISHABLE FOOD items to feed the bug.  We are trying to fill an entire Volkswagon Bug with food.

Time to raid your pantry and see what you have that you could send in to help local families.

It is for a great cause!  So many people rely on the Food Bank to fill the bellies of their children and themselves.

PLEASE HELP US OUT!  You may send in food items until Oct. 22nd.

MATHLETICS WEBSITE

MATHLETICS WEBSITE

Dear Parents:

Mike Mountain Horse has purchased access for each student in our school for a great math site.  This will be a great website for helping your child learn their math concepts in a fun and exciting way.  They are able to earn points and engage in activities with other students their age around the world in LIVE MATHLETICS.  They can even challenge their classmates or other students from Mike Mountain Horse in the live mathletics challenge.

I am also able to track and see your child’s progress on activities on the website.  This allows me to see areas of strength and areas that need some extra focus outside of the learning activities that we complete in class at school.

Stapled to this sheet is your child’s login username and password for the website.  Please make sure that they are spending some time on this website at home as it will have great benefits for them in regards to their understanding of math concepts they are learning in class.

Thanks for your support with using this program at home!  J

Sincerely,

Mrs. Barker
